Senator Lakesia Collins

Senator Lakesia Collins is a lifelong advocate for working families, health equity, and social justice. A proud graduate of Proviso East High School in Maywood, she began her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant in nursing homes, where she witnessed firsthand the urgent need for stronger protections for patients, workers, and families. Her commitment to health advocacy deepened through her work as a union organizer with SEIU Healthcare Illinois, where she fought for reforms in nursing home care, the Illinois Fair Tax, and a higher minimum wage.

In 2020, Collins made history as the first woman elected to represent Illinois’ 9th House District, and in 2023 she was appointed to the Illinois Senate for the 5th District. In Springfield, she has championed legislation to expand access to health care, including landmark reforms giving certified nurse midwives greater independence to serve mothers in health care deserts. She has also been a strong voice for housing justice, standing with grassroots organizations to create affordable housing and expand opportunities for low-income families.

Collins’ leadership is deeply personal. As someone who grew up facing housing insecurity, she has remained committed to ensuring every family has access to dignity, stability, and care. She continues to use her platform to advance policies that protect vulnerable communities, uplift working people, and create pathways to equity across Illinois.

She is the proud mother of three boys and a tireless champion for families across Chicago and beyond.
