Building Diverse Boards and C-Suites in Healthcare

1. Analyze all aspects of diversity on organization outcomes

We must analyze all aspects of board diversity on organization outcomes. A commitment to researching how women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and other diverse communities will provide concrete evidence to support organizational success.

2. Set measurable accountability metrics

Organizations must set short- and long-term measures to ensure board diversity accountability. Organization systems should be aligned to support information-gathering within the organization and between similar organizations.

3. Utilize direct impact data to generate buy-in

Organizations must utilize direct, intentional impact data that portrays how increased board diversity enhances organizational performance to generate buy-in. Organizations must present this data coupled with a thoughtful conversation to identify root-cause concerns regarding board diversity.

4. Recognize that bias is intersectional

We must recognize that bias is intersectional and affects all people involved in the organization. All individuals are accountable for promoting diversity within their organization.

5. Require intentional, continuous implicit bias and systemic inequity training

Organizations must make an intentional, continuous effort to provide implicit bias and systemic inequity training to all levels of leadership and employees. Concrete examples of why the training matters must be presented to all sectors of the organization.
