Healthcare Executive Roundtable: Healthcare Value in a Consumer-Oriented, Patient-Centric Era

Thursday, October 12, 2017  |  12:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Edelman | 250 Hudson St | New York, NY 10013

About the Roundtable

The Center for Healthcare Innovation’s 5th annual Healthcare Executive Roundtable is an intimate, invitation-only, expert roundtable discussion for healthcare executives, key opinion leaders, and patient groups to discuss how stakeholders throughout the healthcare ecosystem can address critical issues related to healthcare value, quality, and cost. The Roundtable will focus on several key market forces that affect the current state of healthcare in the U.S.

One pressing issue that has dominated headlines over the past 18 months is drug pricing. Total drug spending in the U.S. increased by 8.5% in 2016 and is expected to reach $400 billion by 2020. Nearly 90% of drugs dispensed are generics, yet cost and value for medications remain a significant burden for patients. While increased spending has put a strain on public and private payers, the value of prescription drugs has come to the forefront of national attention. In fact, in a recent study, 60% of Americans identified lowering the cost of prescription drugs as a top priority, and 87% favored improving the ease with which generic drugs could come to market. And according to the Edelman Trust Barometer, trust in the pharmaceutical industry is extremely low.

Additionally, the pace of the shift from volume-to-value continues to impact healthcare. In 2014, 90% of payers and 81% of providers were already using some form of value-based purchasing. The heightened attention to value in healthcare also necessitates an increased focus on patient engagement. More informed, empowered patients are acting as consumers for their care and medications, and healthcare stakeholders need to tailor their approaches to better engage patients. Patients who are engaged in their own care have been shown to have better outcomes, and lead to lower costs for the health system.

Finally, these changes come against a backdrop of changes in the political landscape and potential large-scale policy changes. This creates uncertainty for all healthcare stakeholder—providers, payers, patients, biopharma, and policy makers. The fate of the Affordable Care Act and the American Health Care Act will undoubtedly affect stakeholders throughout the healthcare ecosystem. Healthcare professionals and patients will need to tailor their approaches to the new, rapidly shifting healthcare environment.

The Center for Healthcare Innovation’s “Understanding Value in a Consumer-Oriented, Patient-Centric Era” Roundtable on October 12, 2017, in Manhattan is an expert, crosssectoral collaborative discussion that will provide a forum for healthcare executives to discuss these issues and optimize engagement, communication, and collaboration. The exclusive, limited-attendance roundtable is designed to provide the top thought leaders with the latest insights and ideas on healthcare value, quality, and cost. To improve healthcare, disparate sectors must come together to have meaningful, informed dialogues about the nuances of healthcare value, and must do so in a way that fosters multidimensional co-learning.
